Letter ?Oo? Week

?Oo? items in a bag to introduce Letter Oo will be:  an octopus, an owl, a can of black olives, an otter, & an ostrich.  Short vowel sounds are introduced first.  We will not have lessons on the long vowel sounds until much later in the school year.  I will discuss this in class.

This week we will:         Sing ?Old MacDonald? & an octave,

                                                          (Do Re Mi)

                                            Fill a small jar with small Oo items

                                            Complete the Oo page for our ABC book

                                            Celebrate ?Orange Day?; see Homework

                                            Friday, Show & Share:  Bring something

                                             that begins with the letter O.

At centers we will put hole reinforcements on capital ?O?

Homework: Friday, September 12th will be ?Orange Day?.  Students are to wear their uniform shorts, pants, or jumper, but they may wear something orange too.  (shirt, socks, sweater, ribbon, etc.)  Please do not go out and purchase something new to wear.  This is just for fun.  Also if our child forgets to wear something orange, it is ok.

Flashcards to use at home this week:We will color picture cards for 8 short o words.  Please finish these at home.  Make word flashcards to go with the pictures: socks, blocks, mom, pom-pom, rocks, top, dog, and fog.

Here is a list of other things you may want to do this week for letter Oo:

Observe the changes in the seasons.

-         shorter days; getting darker earlier

-         leaves starting to change color/fall

-         cooler temperatures, esp. at night

Visit the observatory, or an orchard.

Talk about your occupation.

Bake something together in the oven.

Find Ohio, Oklahoma, and Oregon on a US map,

Words we will be discussing in class: (please talk about them at home too)

Opposites, but especially

off/on          old/new                 in/out           odd/even

over/under   open/shut              open/closed

More words to build vocabulary ? here are just a few:

ox; oxen      oxygen        ouch            often

opera           orchestra     other            octagon

October       opposite      operate        object

Foods:  omelet         oranges        oyster crackers

onions         olives

Show and Share

For the small plastic jar I have put:  Oscar the Grouch, a plastic owl, an octagon & an empty oyster cracker bag. This is a hard one, so please help me out if you can!  I am trying to use only the short o sound.

Friday, September 12th will also be Show and Share Day for letter O.    

Our class book about our favorite leaves turn out so nice.  I hope you had fun finding a leaf and talking about it.  Thanks for your help.
