September Happenings |
|
|
|

This is the first of nine postings to let you know what we are working on during the month. In religion we are studying about the Church and Mass.
In language arts most of us will begin reading in the first reader. At that time there will be a new vocabulary list to practice. We will also be learning more about punctuation and capitalization, and we will be writing sentences. I will also be reading to the children and they will be exposed to some poetry. Ms. Schnell will be teaching them the Saxon Phonics program.
Counting by 2s and 5s to 50 has been the first focus in math classes. We will also be writing numbers to 20, comparing numbers to 16, writing and counting tallies, counting up to and back from 20 and counting more than 20 objects in a set. If your child knows any of the basic math facts from kindergarten instruction, please review these with him or her. The children will begin memorizing the facts later this year and this will give your child an advantage.
In social studies we will be learning about location and distance, rules and responsibility, civic values and privacy and time. In science we will learn about science tools, safety, Earth and water. If any parent would like to share skills and knowledge with the children, please let me know so we can schedule a time.

This week is Catholic Schools Week. The children and I are looking forward to all the activities and trust that you will be visiting on Wednesday for lunch. In religion this month we will be learning about Catholic schools as part of our Catholic heritage, Lent and prayer. As part of our Christian service we have made valentines for the shut-ins.
We will have our Valentine party on February 12th. The children may begin bringing valentines on February 9th. Be sure to send 20 signed cards. Do not put the name of the recipient on the card or envelope as this allows for easier distribution in the Valentine bags.

In math we will continue practicing our math facts. Please use the fact triangles that will be sent home to practice daily if your child does not know the facts. We will also be doing some work with geometry.
